John Spirko’s - SpeedMod (By John Spirko) Rational for Developing SpeedMod: - To increase production/construction rates to speed up game play particularly for larger maps & scenarios, while maintaining an even production spread. Secondary to this, was the idea that reduced production rates would allow for a wider range of units entering into play.
- Some adjustments were made with speed/range/movement values like the Helicopter and Air Transport, Submarine (deep), AntiAir, Light Artillery, Truck, etc., for faster gameplay and balance with other units. It also allows for better use of combination moves such as a truck carrying armor, then advancing the armor.
- To create a better balance between production and usability so both attacker and defender units are used.
- Tweak units to make them more useful or to rebalance battle ratios:
A) i.e. an armor unit should not be able to consistantly cripple/kill a cruiser/battleship B) set some terrain advantages/disadvantages for units C) increase barrage range for Battleship, Cruiser and Heavy Artillery - Some changes to make the game more variable–units that could bombard cities and kill production can now damage the city.
- New units to add variety and useful features that speed up the game. Recon Drone is a cheap alternative to the satellites. Can explore, patrol, etc. Both the Cruiser(1) and Battleship(2) can carry these units. which can aid in the extended bombard range.
- To factor in some terrain advantages. Example, the Patrol Boat does better in the river and river/swamp terrain and shallow water vs. some units, but loses some battle percentages in deep water. The Attack Helo does well in forested and hill terrain. Many of these sublte advantages/disadvantages will show up in the Unit Information section via Menu
